Stiff Ultra Skin (HARD COATED)

Following the phenomenal success of the original Ultra Skin, Gardner Tackle are delighted to introduce a super stiff version for specialist anglers who want to gain precise control over the way their finished rig lies on the lakebed.

Stiffness makes Stiff Ultra Skin absolutely ideal for use with a multitude of hookbaits and stiff rig terminal arrangements. The added ‘stiffness’ effectively ejects standard bottom baits and when straightened (steamed) it straightens out helping to relieve tangles.

A key technical advantage of a stiff leader is that it improves the all-important reaction speed of the rig as the pivot point is rigidly set at the flexible point closest to the hook end of the leader (this is the start of the stripped end or a hinge point of the broken skin in a Stiff Ultra Skin leader). This amazing material provides this vital rigidity without compromising knot strength or affecting the way knots are formed. In essence this means that the skin will not break when pulled down with a well-made figure 8 knot.

In terms of actual fishing, we recommend choosing the Stiff Ultra Skin in circumstances where you are confident that the lake bed is free of debris and relatively flat so that it does not rise. This means that ‘clean’ silt, clay patches, sand and gravel etc. are ideal substrates to fish on. If you are fishing slightly dirtier spots, it is important to think about the lead placement and how to ensure that the tackle can lay out without being hindered by debris or lumpy rocky ground. Conversely, if the lake bed is soft, the lead placement needs to ensure that the hooklink does not hold as the lead digs into the substrate.

However, if you do it right, you can create a wide variety of hinged and combi-style fixtures that simply work better.

The matt finish of Stiff Ultra Skin helps the material blend in with the aquatic environment. Of course this is also helped by the fact that the material sinks well and is more likely to settle flush with the lake bed. The skin and core colours are matched to help maintain this excellent camouflage in completed rigs.

Stiff Ultra Skin strips cleanly and won't break when tying a well-made "figure 8" loop knot.
